There was a moment in BMW M history when the recipe was almost impossibly pure: a naturally aspirated, high-revving engine, hydraulic steering, rear-wheel drive, and a manual gearbox that made the driver an essential part of the experience.
This 2011 BMW M3 Sedan is that philosophy made real. Finished in sophisticated Space Gray Metallic over Black leather, it pairs the legendary S65 V8 with a proper six-speed manual and the coveted factory Competition Package (ZCP). It is one of those rare specifications that feels even more significant as the years pass.

THE ENGINE IS THE EXPERIENCE
Beneath the sculpted hood lives the S65: a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 producing 414 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Its eight individual throttle bodies, razor-sharp response and extraordinary 8,400-rpm redline make it one of BMW M's defining engines.
The power delivery is wonderfully progressive. At everyday speeds, the M3 is civilized and composed. Wind it toward redline, and the sound hardens into a thrilling mechanical howl. Modern turbocharged sedans may be quicker, but they cannot replicate this exact sensation.
And this car has the transmission I would choose: the six-speed manual. Every downshift, every carefully timed throttle blip and every climb through the gears belongs to the driver. Three pedals transform an already extraordinary engine into a deeply personal experience.
WHY THE COMPETITION PACKAGE MATTERS
This is a genuine factory ZCP car, not an M3 wearing aftermarket Competition-style wheels. Introduced late in the E9x generation, the package brought meaningful chassis changes: a suspension lowered by approximately 10 mm, revised Electronic Damper Control calibration and adjusted stability-control programming.
Then there are the exquisite 19-inch Style 359M wheels. Their intricate, motorsport-inspired design fills the widened arches beautifully, especially against Space Gray Metallic. To my eye, they are among BMW M's finest factory wheel designs.
ZCP matters because it represents a complete, factory-engineered specification rather than a collection of cosmetic additions. Combine it with the six-speed manual and the shorter-production E90 sedan body, and you have a configuration that speaks directly to the most discerning M3 enthusiasts.
FOUR DOORS. PURE M CHARACTER.
The E90 has always been one of my favorite M3 shapes. It carries its performance with remarkable restraint: muscular fenders, a distinctive hood, M3 side gills, four exhaust outlets and an unmistakably purposeful stance. Yet it remains an elegant, usable sedan.
The interior follows the same philosophy. Black leather sport seats, an M multifunction steering wheel, carbon-look trim and that perfectly placed manual shifter give the cabin a focused, timeless character. This example also shows a power glass sunroof, iDrive navigation, rear parking assistance and configurable M Drive settings.
Through M Drive, the driver can tailor engine response, electronic damping, steering assistance and stability settings. That ability to move from comfortable daily driving to a more focused experience is a large part of the E90's brilliance.

A MODERN COLLECTOR'S BMW
The E9x was the first and only M3 generation to use a V8. The E90 sedan enjoyed a shorter production run than the coupe, making its combination of four-door practicality and that remarkable powertrain especially interesting.
Today, the ingredients that define this car are becoming scarce: a high-revving naturally aspirated V8, hydraulic steering, rear-wheel drive and a genuine manual gearbox. Add the desirable factory Competition Package, and its enthusiast appeal becomes easy to understand.
No automobile is guaranteed to appreciate; originality, service history, condition and market demand all matter. But the most compelling collector cars tend to offer an experience that newer models cannot recreate. This M3 makes an exceptionally strong case on that basis alone.
MY TAKE
I love the quiet confidence of this car. Space Gray, Black leather, those unmistakable Competition wheels and four exhaust tips: nothing excessive, nothing unnecessary. It looks like a beautifully resolved BMW sedan until you hear the V8 and see the six-speed shifter.
Its remarkably preserved presentation only adds to the occasion. This is a car I would want to drive, admire and preserve—not simply for what it might become worth, but for what it already represents.
One of the great engines. One of the great M3 generations. And one very special specification.
